Curator’s Statement:

Street photography is such a vast field that is difficult to define. There’s a fine line between documentary and street style. I see street as more of a candid capture of culture & specific locations/neighborhoods at any given time without an actual event going on. It focuses on silly and/or spontaneous moments secretly caught, almost voyeuristic – typically a moment that no one thought anyone saw. The main aspect of street photography is the composition of shapes, whether it was a fluke or not.

some noteworthy street photographers:
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, Bruce Gilden, Alex Webb, Robert Frank, Janet Delaney, Tatsuo Suzuki, Walker Evans, Boogie, Jeff Mermelstein. AND Martin Parr. AND WEEGEE!!
And,  of course, Vivian Maier! -Anna Alexander

South x Southeast Photo Gallery

South x Southeast Photo Gallery showcases emerging and established photographers work, and houses the corporate headquarters of SxSE. My intent with South x Southeast from the beginning was to give emerging and established artists who are from, or shooting, the Southeast more exposure. South x Southeast Photo Gallery will help me in doing that more effectively.

South x Southeast Photo Gallery is housed in the corner space down this row of 1905 brick buildings in Molena, Georgia. The Downtown. I grew up here, moved away in 1974, and returned in 1997. Molena was a farming and cotton town originally. The railroad just across the way from the gallery was where my father as a child, and my beloved grandparents, watched FDR come by – on the back of the caboose, waving to the crowds, and sometimes stopping – on his way to the Little White House in Warm Springs.

The middle of the SxSE gallery space is where I bought a single-dip strawberry cone from Mr. Claude Daniels when this was his drug store in the ’60’s. In addition to being a beautiful space for a gallery, it holds a lot of good memories for me.

An hour south of Atlanta it was where my great-great grandfather moved his family during the Civil War from Atlanta. Circa 1860. He carved McCrary Road out of deep woods and red clay. We are the Piedmont – where the Appalachian Ridge spits out a few more low mountains. It is a beautiful area, and we hope you will come to see the exhibitions we host.

xx

Nancy

About Molena

Molena consists of a Bed and Breakfast, a post office, a bank, a few churches, and about 400 people, most of whom know each other, and a good deal of whom are related. An hour south of Atlanta, an hour east of Columbus, and an hour west of Macon, we are conveniently located for quick getaways. Also, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is one hour away, up a two-lane road that ends at the 5th runway. Located nearby is the Little White House, the residence of President Franklin D. Roosevelt while he was being treated for polio in the town of Warm Springs, Georgia. Callaway Gardens, a 14,000 acre resort situated in the Appalachians foothills of Pine Mountain provides hiking, boating, cabin rentals, golf, and skiing – as well as photo ops at every turn – and is a short 30-minute drive. There are lovely Air BNB and VRBO options on farms and in other small towns close by. We look forward to welcoming you.

Theme:

When I think of summertime in the South so much comes to mind. The thick dew covering the fields in the mornings, the damp heat of mid-day when everything slows down, and the cool of the evening that beckons you back outside. This is the South’s season. Blue skies and billowing white clouds, crisp shadows, cold drinks, being lazy, gardens, hitting the beach and escaping to the mountains, picnics, dog days, big tomatoes, sweet melons, cold martinis, and the occasional breeze. We want you to tell us what summer is for you. In an image. Or three. Or more.

Juror:

Julie Grahame, independent photographer’s rep and publisher of the wonderful aCurator blog.

Brickworks Gallery

Brickworks GalleryBrickworks Gallery was founded in 2016 by Laura W. Adams.  Adams, an artist herself, has shown her work for 25 years in galleries and exhibitions across the country.  Throughout her years as an artist, she has come to admire and collect works by many other artists she has met along the way.  Adams has brought these artists together to create Atlanta’s new art venue, Brickworks Gallery.

Brickworks Gallery is dedicated to showcasing the work of talented and inspired artists whose work tells compelling stories. The artists come from all walks of life, but they have this trait in common:  their work is a finely crafted expression of their lives and life experiences, story-telling art that is fun, compelling and accessible.

Brickworks Gallery is located in an historic industrial-era building on the fabulous Atlanta Beltline.  The B. Mifflin Hood Brick Co. building, at 686-A Greenwood Avenue in the Virginia Highland neighborhood, has been refurbished and brought back to life as a gallery and meeting place. The gallery is a 5 minute walk north on the Beltline from Ponce City Market, and a 5 minute walk down the Beltline from the south-east corner of Piedmont Park.  Come spend a day in our wonderful neighborhood of shops, restaurants and parks and visit the gallery to view the fabulous works!
